“Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what counts is best.”
~Bob Talbert

Our study on the 50 states of our country!

The fourth graders have been informed that they will be learning about the states and capitals of our United States. The fourth graders are learning about the five regions of our country:

« The Northeast
« The Southeast
« The Midwest
«  The Southwest
« The West

The fourth graders are learning about the states of each region—the location of the states, the capitals of the states, state birds, state flowers, and what each state is known for.  They will be participating in activities weekly and will be assessed at the end of the weeks on the week’s region as well as any previously learned region.  During this time, the fourth graders will continue to participate in states' location activities to prepare them for the test. The states’ test is on Friday, March 2nd!

The test will assess the students' knowledge on the location and spelling of each state. The students will receive a copy of the United States map and the test form which will be a list numbered 1 to 50. On the map, each state will have a number. The student is to record the state's name next to the number on the test form that matches the number in its location. For instance, if Illinois had the number 23 in it, the student would write Illinois on line #23 on the test form.

The students will be taking a separate test to assess their knowledge and retention of the states’ capitals.  This test will be scheduled two weeks after the states’ test.  It is encouraged for fourth graders to practice the states’ spellings and locations at home.  There are Youtube videos and online games posted on our class website:  www.hfsgrade4.blogspot.com.

Multiplication

The fourth graders are grasping long multiplication. I believe more practice on their addition and multiplication fast facts is in order to help increase their speed and understanding of this important concept. We will continue to practice two-digit by two-digit, three-digit by two-digit, and four-digit by two-digit multiplication in the days ahead. The fourth graders have learned and have shown positivity and excitement to multiply three-digit numbersThey will be assessed in long multiplication later this week.

Language Arts—Reading & Writing

The fourth graders, as a class, will begin reading Sarah, Plain and Tall, a chapter book written by Patricia MacLachlan.  We will be reading the book together, predicting and analyzing this literary work.  The fourth graders will participate in hands-on experiences and will answer chapter comprehension questions throughout the unit to increase our metacognitive skills.

Sarah, Plain and Tall is a great novel that gets us prepared to learn about pioneer life as we get closer to our Oregon Trail unit.  The fourth graders will participate in activities that will integrate and enhance their language arts skills with their science and social studies capabilities.  Parent volunteers are wanted for the science experiment(s) that will occur this unit.  More information will be delivered when the time arrives.  Thank you for your support!
